I spent this past weekend in Santa Cruz with a few friends. I’ve lived in Bay Area for eleven years and have never made it down there. Shame on me, It is only 40 minutes away from my home. Anyway, Santa Cruz really blows me away with the gorgeous coastline and ambiance, it is a lay back surfer town. More importantly, it has one of the best fabrics shops in Bay Area. I popped in Harts Fabrics before heading home.
This store is unique because it carries not only quilting and home dec fabrics but also apparel fabrics. Their specialties are cotton fabrics, which is great for me because cotton is easy to sew with and comfortable. On the apparel fabrics section, besides cotton, they carry silk and knits.
Here are the assortment of silk and silk blend
Cotton Satin Silk which is soft and perfect for Sencha and I bought two yards of this fabrics. They are not cheap at $13.99/yard
They also have a great selection of Liberty of London at a hefty $39.99/yard. Thank God summer is almost over otherwise I might be tempted to buy some. They also carry Anna Maria’s voile which is soft and perfect for summer tops.
Their quilting cotton fabrics are also great, totally awesome especially on Japanese fabrics
They also carry Nani Iro and Etsuko Furuya…totally awesome. and oh, they also have an online store.
The staffs were not friendly but not rude though I don’t think they were helpful. I asked if they could find out for me how much fabric I need to buy for Sencha and they refused to help me on that so I have to whip out my iPhone, which is no big deal but it’s just annoying. I am used to asking my LYS how much yardage I need and they will look it up for me online.
I didn’t check out the home dec section since I don’t have a need for it right now. They also have a great selections on notions, trims and books. I will totally stop by again in the future and yay, more reason to drive down to Santa Cruz.
