Oh my god, my last sewing project was dated May 2nd. I am so happy to be sewing again. It is like riding a bike, I felt a little jittery when hitting the stitch pedal in the beginning but after a few seconds, it felt like reconnecting with an old pal. Anyway, I made this in time for my good friend, Kimberly’s bridal shower. I promised her months ago and I am keeping my words.
Pattern: Amy Butler’s Kimberly Bag for my friend, Kimberly.
Pattern Description: A long satchel bag with zipper closure
Pattern Sizing: One size and I didn’t enlarge or shrink the recommended size
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instruction is fairly clear. Amy tends to be verbose especially in the complicated section like installing the zipper. So some people may not like it. She includes schematic as a visual aid, which is helpful. A lot of people complain that the zipper installation instruction is vague. Although it is no picnic, I think the instruction is pretty spot on. At least I was able to install the zipper with struggles here and there though. The last bag that I sewed, I wasn’t even successful with the zipper and had to cheat a bit. It’d be nice if Amy could provide tips on how to deal with the zipper pull tab, this is an area where people often trip (myself included)
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: love the shape, it is a fun bag to make. The steps are not extremely long so it is a good intermediate sewing project. The pattern pieces are also manageable compared to the Field tote bag, where I almost passed out from cutting too many exterior, lining, and interfacing pieces
Dislikes: the dimension of the bag is too long on the length but too short on the width. I will not sew this bag for me personally just because it won’t fit wider items.
Fabric Used: Amy Butler Nigella Imperial Fan in grey and satin lining from JoAnn
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: none
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? no, but I highly recommend it for intermediate sewer
